The Republican Party - No Incentives to Fix Problems
The Republican Party will never fix any of the problems it rails against. Why not? Because they have no incentive to do so they gained power and continue to hold it through inciting the anger and fear of the electorate. If they solve the problems that they use to make people angry and afraid, they will lose power.
Look at their "accomplishments" since gaining control of Congress. Have they reduced abortion? No. Have they reduced the deficit? No; it has exploded. Have they improved education? No; "No Child Left Behind" was one of the poorest pieces of legislation ever written and was woefully under-funded. (Where did the money go? To companies like Halliburton through Iraq.) In each instance, they have insisted that somebody else is to blame. First it was the President. Bush took office. Then it was the Senate. They gained control of that. The CIA was blamed for invading Iraq. Now it's judges. They will continue to find somebody to blame because as long as those who vote for them are angry, they'll continue to win elections. In the meantime, they use that anger to their advantage to further gain control of the political system in the US and essentially turn it into a one party nation. Republicans are succeeding where communists failed.
But they are not simply wasting the opportunity that they have been given; far from it. The excessively wealthy know a good thing when they see it. So somebody is benefitting from the Republican domination of the Federal government. While the US government goes bankrupt through the bleeding caused by Iraq, the rich get richer through reduced taxes. Patriotism, like soldiering, is best appreciated when demonstrated by somebody else, I guess.
There are many good people who support the Republican party. But their leaders continue to deceive them and misdirect their anger. Perhaps one day, if Republicans completely take over the country, those who voted them into power and allowed them to subvert the system of checks and balances will finally wake up. That will be an interesting day.
